V.S.Z was founded in 1985. The aim of the society was, and still is, to exchange knowledge concerning treatment and sterilization of instruments and the handling of sterile medical devices. The society wants to promote quality standards for the Central Sterilization Department and sufficient financial strength to ensure a good infrastructure.
In order to achieve this a symposium is held twice a year. Also courses for C.S.S.D responsibles and Sterilization assistants are organized on a yearly base.
Currently the society counts 150 regular members, i.e., C.S.S.D collaborators and 30 special members or companies. 90% of the flemish hospitals are represented in the society. Since the start the focus of the society has been changed from the C.S.S.D responsibles towards all collaborators.

Het ziekenhuisnetwerk Leuven werkte een tekst uit over reprocessing van medische hulpmiddelen voor eenmalig gebruik.
De tekst wordt door het bestuur VSZ als zeer nuttig aanvaard. De sterkte van de tekst is het feit dat er een kwaliteitsniveau gehanteerd wordt dat gesteund is op een brede beslissingsbasis binnen de ziekenhuizen en op een goede overeenkomst met eventuele externe aannemers.
De tekst is een voorstel en mag niet als een richtlijn gezien worden voor de Vlaamse ziekenhuizen.

In onze "moderne" competitieve maatschappij is voor de industrie, geheel terecht, kwaliteit een basisvereiste geworden, een conditio sine qua non. Dit niet alleen om de klanten tevreden te stellen maar ook om prijsmatig te kunnen concurreren met de andere spelers op een mondiale markt. De mini wereld van de sterilisatie is daar natuurlijk een afspiegeling van. Ook in onze biotoop wordt tegenwoordig meer en meer actief onderschreven dat het eindproduct van goede kwaliteit moet zijn. Kwaliteitssystemen en dito normen vinden dan ook geleidelijk aan ingang om dit te ondersteunen.
De filosofie van een dergelijk systeem is: voorkomen is beter (goedkoper) dan genezen. Op de sterilisatieafdeling moet hetzelfde principe ook toegepast worden. Want door het beter beheersen en controleren van de processen wordt het mogelijk de gunstige uitkomst van de reprocessing te voorspellen. Hierdoor worden niet alleen belangrijke correctieve acties zoals recalls vermeden of toch tot een minimum beperkt maar wordt ook de link tussen en de rol van de CSSD in infectiepreventie versterkt. Deze wordt meer en meer gelegd heden ten dage. Het gevolg en resultaat zijn een grotere tevredenheid van de klanten, een betere patient gerichte zorg en, onrechtstreeks, het verhogen van de status van de afdeling in het ziekenhuis. En indien een kwaliteitssysteem geen oefening in bureaucratie wordt zal ook de arbeidstevredenheid van de medewerker verhogen omdat de identificatie met het eindproduct veel groter zal zijn. Zonder een groter inzicht in en kennis en beheersing van de productie processen plus een grondige mentaliteitsverandering op de sterilisatieafdeling kan het invoeren van een kwaliteitssysteem echter niet slagen. De "ambachtelijke", individuele interpretatie van de procedures, zoals nogal eens het geval is en soms ook blijft in de C.S.A., moet vervangen worden door een industriële, homogene benadering van de productieprocessen door de medewerkers.
In de toekomst zullen personeelsbeleid en -selectie ongetwijfeld moeten herbelicht en herbekeken worden in het licht van deze wijzigende omstandigheden.
Een aantal Vlaamse sterilisatieafdelingen pronken al, terecht, met hun ISO 9001 of EN ISO 13485 (2003) certificaat. De V.S.Z wil ook de andere afdelingen helpen hun kwaliteit reproduceerbaar te maken. Daarom geven we op deze pagina's voorbeelden van een kwaliteitssysteem. We hopen dat het een inspiratiebron kan zijn voor het opzetten van uw eigen kwaliteitshandboek. We houden eraan de V.Z.A. te bedanken voor het verlenen van de toelating het kwaliteitshandboek te mogen publiceren op onze website. De basis is immers een ontwikkeling van de vereniging voor ziekenhuisapothekers.
